If you've been considering a professional website for your own small business, read this article first.

Think You Can't Afford a Professional Website for Your Business?
by Suzanne Lieurance

If you're a small business owner, balancing the budget for your company can be a bit tricky. You probably know you should have a professional website, yet you also know that right now you can't afford the cost of a website designer, plus a webmaster who will maintain and update your site every month. What you might not know, however, is that this doesn't mean you can't afford to create an online presence for your business.

346154_beach_car
Even the smallest of businesses can afford a blog.

Here are five reasons you should be blogging for business right now:

1. Creating an online presence is easy with a blog. Today, everyone expects anyone with a serious business to be visible online. But that doesn't mean a small business owner has to shell out big bucks on an expensive website right from the start. Instead, start with a blog. A blog can be set up easily and quickly at little or no cost - so no matter how small your company might be, you can be online blogging for business in (literally) a few minutes. You can also update your blog much easier and quicker than you can a regular website. You don't have to wait for a webmaster to make changes for you.

2. A blog lets you develop relationships with your customers or clients. If you blog regularly, your readers get to know more about you and your services. They can also leave comments for you on the blog, so you can interact with them through this site. Research shows that people are more likely to do business with someone they know. Post to your blog daily (or at least several times a week) and readers will get to know you, trust you, and feel confident to buy your products and or services.

3. A blog gives you additional opportunities to network with other small businesses. You can provide reciprocal links at your blog. That just means you put a link to another company's website or blog on your blog and that company puts a link to your blog on theirs. You benefit from these links because your blog attracts additional readers from these other sites.

4. You can use your blog to help build your mailing list. A good way to do this is to offer something free in return for joining your mailing list. Free ebooks related to the products or services offered by your business are perfect "give aways" to use for this purpose. Put a sign-up box on your blog where readers can join your mailing list and automatically receive your free products via email.

5. By regularly posting to your blog, you become an "expert" in your line of work. People always turn to experts when they need help. Establish yourself as an expert in your field and people will turn to you when they need the particular type of products or services that you have to offer.

If a blog still seems too overwhelming to you right now, contact The Lieurance Group for information and find out how inexpensively one of their writers can start blogging for business for you.

Fall Berries

Summer is just about over. Soon it will be time to re-arrange your stores and re-do merchandise displays. Here are some suggestions on how to bring a fall theme into your shops that’s attractive and inexpensive:

- scatter artificial fall leaves in and around merchandise.

- drape long lengths of fabrics, in bold fall colors, across tables to create runners that will enhance displays.

- tuck fall berries into the design elements of your stores, such as draperies, fixtures and plants to give them a fall look.

I hope these ideas help you as you prepare for the fall season. Please stop by booth #411 at the August Gift Show which runs from August 4th through August 8th.

You'll see all the hand crafted jewelry creations available from the Created by Shari jewelry line. You'll find all her jewelry designs complement the selection of gift items you already carry in your stores.

Also, check back here often for information about show specials from Created by Shari and other companies I will represent at the show, too.

The Kansas City Gift show is just two weeks away. “Passport to Profits” is the theme of the August 2006 show - which runs from August 4th through August 8th. If this is your first trip to the Kansas City Gift Mart, I hope these tips will help you easily navigate the huge gift mart complex.

A Few Tips to Help You Make the Most of the August Gift Show

- Bring a tote bag to hold sales literature, catalogues, brochures and any copies of wholesale orders you place.

- When you check in, make sure you pick up a store guide and map of the mart.

- Bring plenty of business cards to give to sales representatives. This saves time since it’s easier for them to fill in order sheets from a business card rather than have to ask you to dictate all that information.

- Wear comfortable shoes and don’t carry a heavy purse. Many buyers bring small shopping totes on wheels since it doesn't take long to get tired if you're lugging around all the sales brochures, etc. that you will acquire at the show.

- If you’re a new buyer make sure you have the following: a copy of your business retail tax certificate, a business check with your business name imprinted on it, a business card, picture ID or driver’s license. For more information about registering to buy at the gift show log onto www.kcgiftmart.com.

- Even if it's 100 degrees outside, bring a sweater since the gift mart can be very cool inside.

- Above all, don’t forget to stop by my booth #411 and see the entire line of Created by Shari jewelry which will be on display.

Check back here often for information about show specials from Created by Shari and other companies I will represent at the show, too.

Call, fax or email me for re-orders and current wholesale information on all the other companies I represent.

Thinking of Joining Your Local Business Association?

If you've been wondering whether you should join your local business association, read this first.

YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION: IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?
by Suzanne Lieurance

499229_redundancy As a small business owner you need to carefully pick and choose where your hard-earned money is going to go. Maybe you've considered joining your local business association but aren't sure it's worth the cost of the yearly dues, or maybe you simply don't know enough about the benefits such an association can provide.

Annual dues for membership vary from association to association. Generally they range from $25.00 to $250.00. But, you get what you pay for, which means those with higher fees offer more benefits. Dues are used to pay for speakers, meeting rooms and special events, as well as cover any administrative and printing costs (for newsletters and other publications). They usually include a listing in the association's directory, subscription to the monthly newsletter, and sometimes, one (business size) ad in the newsletter.

Ultimately, deciding to join your local business association is up to you, but understanding the benefits such associations provide will help you make that decision.

Ask what your local association offers in the way of:

Networking Opportunities - Most associations have several per month. Many have a weekly "Tips Club" or "Business Card Exchange" where members can share customer/client leads. Other groups offer after - hours coffees and/or monthly luncheons. All of these events give the small business owner an opportunity to build relationships with other business owners in the area who can provide insights unique to the local marketplace.

Special Insurance Rates and Information - Many associations (usually the larger ones) offer members special rates on health insurance and worker's compensation. Some associations offer workshops to educate new business owners about the kinds of insurance they will need.

Educational Programs - Most associations (no matter how large or small) offer at least a few yearly educational programs of interest to small business owners, including workshops about tax laws, record keeping, computing for business, marketing, etc. Some do this on a monthly basis. Find out how regularly your association provides these kinds of opportunities and ask what subjects have been covered in past programs.

Security Services - Business owners who can't afford to pay for a security service on their own pool money with other members in the association and pay to have the business area patrolled (since businesses are all within a few miles of one another). Also, some associations set up a business "Block Watch." One business owner on each block watches out and lets everyone on that block know if anything suspicious is seen.

A Member Directory - Most associations publish a yearly directory, which lists each member's business name, address, and phone number. These directories are given to each member and are also sent to board members of local homes associations, churches, schools, and other area groups so the entire community is made aware of the products and services available by area businesses.

Discount Rates - Often members of an association are able to pool their resources to get advertising from newspapers, radio, TV, etc. at a discount rate, as well as discounts on other products and services like shipping, pagers and cell phones, etc.

Yearly Events - Many associations sponsor a yearly event designed to increase members' visibility within the community - something like a street fair or a festival. It's a great way to introduce people in the community to their local business owners. An association might also offer a "Tax Day Conference" to bring representatives from every sort of tax agency under one roof to answer tax questions, conduct seminars and distribute information in a "non-threatening" environment. Individual business owners would spend a lot more money to get this kind of extensive information on their own.

Community Service Opportunities - Some business associations raise money to provide community service projects in their areas or they simply donate money to local groups. This creates goodwill between business owners and members of the community. Not only does the community benefit from this, the business owner does, too. When residents feel a local business is friendly and caring they're more apt to buy the services or products of that business.

A Newsletter and Web Site - A monthly newsletter lets a business owner know what's going on with other businesses in his area. It also gives him a chance to have his business spotlighted from time to time. Some associations have a "Member of the Month" featured in each newsletter, and press releases introduce new businesses to the community. Many associations now have Web sites, which give business owners even more opportunities for promoting their products and services.

A Chance to Speak Out - Joining your local business association gives you a collective voice for determining what will happen within your business neighborhood. Associations usually work together with area homes associations, schools, churches, etc. for the overall good of the community. Find out how closely these groups work together in your area.

Obviously, every association can't offer ALL of the above benefits, but most members still find their local business association a source of invaluable support.

To find the association in your area, look in the Yellow Pages under "Business Associations" or call your Chamber of Commerce. Attend one of their meetings, ask questions, and find out if your local business association is right for you.

HatB
Hats Off To This Idea!

Although most women no longer wear hats to church or on special occasions many still wear light and airy straw hats when they relax on the beach or sightsee on vacation.

We all know, sometimes all it takes to sell merchandise is coming up with a creative way to display it. Here’s a clever idea for displaying Created by Shari Angel pins, which plays on summer trends in ladies' hats.

Just find a pretty straw hat (an antique one will do) and place an angel pin on the brow (the area on the hat that has the ribbon attached to it). Or if you like, place pins all over it. You’ll find showing customers a new way to accessorize with these sweet pins will help them sell.

And remember, this month Created by Shari is running a special on watch necklaces. Order a dozen of this item and receive a FREE display or FREE shipping.

Please don’t hesitate to call, fax or email me for re-orders and current wholesale information on the Created by Shari jewelry line.

Your Customers Will Love This Sugar Cookie Fruit Tart

Homemade sugar cookies, fresh from the oven, along with a glass of lemonade make a refreshing summertime snack. But you'll want to tell your customers they can also create something a bit more elegant with a package of Sugar Cookie Mix from the Three Angels Gourmet Co.

It's easy to prepare a scrumptious cookie tart in a tart pan, ice it with a cream cheese mixture, then decorate the tart with pieces of fresh fruit.

fruit pizza

Here's all you need to make this delicious and eye-appealing cookie tart:

1 pkg. Three Angels Gourmet Co. Sugar Cookie Mix

1 egg, plus 1 egg yolk

1 stick butter

An assortment of fresh fruit, cut into small pieces

4 oz. cream cheese, softened

1/4 c. sugar

A little vanilla flavoring (1/4 tsp. or less)

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Make cookie mix according to directions on package and chill for at least 30 minutes.

When the dough is cold, mold it into a tart pan that has been greased with cooking spray. Bake the dough at 350 degrees for about 15 to 18 minutes, until golden brown. Cool completely after baking.

In a small bowl, combine the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla; beat until fluffy. Spread a thin layer of this mixture over the cooled cookie crust. Arrange fruit over the cream cheese mixture as shown in the photo above.

Drizzle warm apricot preserves over the fruit, if desired. Refrigerate at least one hour.

To serve, cut into wedges. Store in refrigerator. Makes about 12 servings.

Watch Necklaces from Created by Shari

Today's BUZZ from Beyond the Expected

If you were at the last trade show in Kansas City in June, you probably saw one of Shari Cabra's new watch necklaces, also called watch slides.

The watch face on this new item is available in four different shapes: round, oval, square and rectangular. Each is embellished with assorted bobbles and charms. Each one is unique since they are all created from a variety of silverware patterns.

Each watch necklace comes with a simple black suede cord. However, for a more elegant look, a silver chain can be used instead of the cord, making it easy for you to cross sell silver chains with this new product.

This month Created by Shari is running a special on these watch necklaces. Order a dozen of this item and receive a FREE display or FREE shipping.

Are your customers having 4th of July picnics today to celebrate the holiday?

Many Americans are.

And, since easy-to-prepare products, like Divine Dill Dip Mix from the Three Angels Gourmet Co., sell so well during the summer when customers are often searching for foods for these picnics, parties, and other celebrations, here are some tips for successfully sampling this type of product - for maximum sales.

Sampling Success With Divine Dill Dip Mix

cheeseballMany stores that sell Divine Dill Dip Mix from the Three Angels Gourmet Co. sell out of it immediately when they sample it.

Three Angels wants you to experience the same success with this delicious product, so these successful stores were asked for their sampling tips.

Here's what they suggest:

The Divine Dill Dip Mix can be used in a variety of ways. For dip, simply combine the package of mix with 2 cups of sour cream. Be sure to tell people how easy it is to make the dip. They will be surprised at how delicious it tastes, yet all they have to do is mix it with 2 cups of sour cream. Almost anyone can do that!

Cross sell the Divine Dill Dip Mix with crackers, chips, or pretzels that you also carry by sampling the dip with one or more of these items.

Make it EASY for customers to buy the product. Place the packages of Divine Dill Dip Mix (and packages of anything you want to cross sell with it) right NEXT to the samples. If customers have to go searching for the product they are tasting sometimes they won't bother. But if the packaged product is right there when they take a taste of it, many of them will pick up a package or two for purchase even if they didn't come into the store looking for dip mix.

Remind customers that there are a dozen uses for the Divine Dill Dip Mix. These uses are included on a sheet in every package.

Make it easy for people to make a decision about the Divine Dill Dip Mix. If you sample ONLY the Divine Dill Dip Mix (save other dips for another day) people won't have to choose between one dip mix or another. The Divine Dill Dip Mix isn't a major purchase, so most people who like it will feel they can afford it and will buy it.

Put out the Divine Dill Dip samples on your busiest day - right before lunch, or in late afternoon when people need a snack. More people will sample that way. And when more people sample, more people buy.

Happy Sales to You!
